Roller Kingdom

Post by JerryFish »

Just read this on-line. Kind of bitter sweet. Had lots of good memories from there, but it was unsightly the last time I saw it.
At least it's going to the high school and not some strip mall or better yet another Dollar Store.

Burn Rubber by the Gap Band -- SOOO Roller Kingdom!!
Ooooh, and Tom Sawyer - Rush!! Those songs would play & people would go nuts. The good ole days when skates had wheels side-by-side.

We should all get together & go skating! Hey -- Double Dutch Bus anyone? And what about "couple skate?"

Remember the Ardoin's? I heard Toni Ardoin (the son) was killed in a car accident several years ago. Anyone else heard that?

Thanks Jerry for sharing that article. I didn't know CHS was aquiring that land. The old rink really IS an eyesore for all the great memories behind it.

My favorite "Couples Skate" songs:
Keep On Lovin' You.....REO Speedwagon and
Babe........Styx. Of course if you missed out on the Couples Skate then it was time for Space Invaders, or my favorite Tron.

B-52's Rock Lobster.

Lady, I think that might have been the last time I've heard that song.

I used to love getting the nachos with extra jalapenos, still do actually.

38 Special "Caught Up in You" and "Tom Sawyer" always make me think of Roller Kingdom. I hated to skate. I was terrible at it and never tried to get any better. All I ever did on those obligatory Friday nights at Roller Kingdom was hang out in the cafe and play video games until it was time to go home.

I'm glad to see the school board stepping up to do something about that place. It's been an eyesore for years.

I think Jerry knows more about what's going on around here I do! And I live right down the road from the Roller Kingdon. Hadn't heard that CHS was acquiring that land - That is great news. And YES it is still currently an eyesore complete with graffiti. They never rebuilt after the fire as they were seriously underinsured. Sounds like they will be making quite a profit on the place now.

Funny, I couldn't stop myself from singing the words to all of the songs ya'll mentioned.

Julie - yes I heard that one of the owners of Roller Kingdom was killed in a car accident. I think it occurred about 4-5 years ago around Halloween. I remember taking my kids trick or treating in River Forrest with several people, including Ben and Dodie Knight. Dodie was friends with the wife of the guy that was killed. Can't remember her name but she brought the kids out trick or treating - it was just sooooo sad.

Poor Jerry....I will tell him to check the site when he gets here tonight. Jerry, Sarah and Colin are flying in tonight from their 3 day Roman holiday and staying with us for 2 nights. I feel a hangover coming on....
